What 㵎 means
It names water running through mountain valleys. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses 㵎 as water enclosed by mountains and records 㵎水 as a named stream.
The three-dot water component 氵 marks water, while 閒 supplies the sound. The Book of Documents, an early Chinese classic, groups 㵎 with 伊、洛、瀍 among waterways flowing into the Yellow River. A geographical text from China's Han dynasty also records 㵎水 near Hongnong and Xin'an.
Later dictionaries connect 㵎 with 澗 and list 礀 and 𡼏 as other written forms. Japanese kanji dictionaries preserve たに (“valley”) and たにみず (“valley water”) as readings.
Choose 㵎 when the source spells it that way
Modern dictionaries treat 㵎 as a rare written variant of 澗. Use it to retain a historical quotation, dictionary entry, or exact source spelling; for ordinary modern Traditional Chinese, 澗 is the usual choice.
In Mandarin, both are pronounced jiàn, with a falling tone. Pinyin, the Chinese sound-based input method, may suggest 澗 instead. Wubi 86 and Cangjie shape-based input can target 㵎 directly. If it appears as a blank or box, your font or app lacks the glyph; try a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean font that supports Extension A, a block of Han characters.
Rare and bookish; choose it to preserve an exact source spelling.
