䀡 is a character about peeping that mostly hides inside dictionaries: it writes peering or peeking, with one lexicographic strand for eyes cast down. Its evidence is lexical: regional word lists, Chinese dictionaries, and Vietnamese Nôm sources, so a lone 䀡 in a message needs context, not a guessed meaning.

What 䀡 means

䀡 names covert or attentive looking. It can write watching, inspecting, or peering, while one lexicographic strand uses it for eyes cast down.

An early witness is the Fangyan (方言), a Western Han glossary of regional words, which records 䀡 as a Southern-Chu (南楚) word for looking secretly (竊視). Taiwan's 2024 Ministry of Education variant record notes that 䀡 is absent from the early dictionary Shuowen (說文); the Yupian (玉篇), compiled around 543, and later dictionaries preserve the written form.

The build tells the same story: the eye component 目 marks the meaning field and 占 supplies the sound, a classic phonetic-semantic (形声) construction. Its job was to write a word for peeping, alongside the better-known 覘.

Why does 䀡 mean different things?

The tradition decides which reading it carries. Later Chinese lexica assign it the sense of eyes cast down, and the historical notebook Qingxiang Zaji (青箱雜記) preserves the phrase 䀡䁠, glossed as sexual misconduct.

In Vietnamese Nôm, the old Vietnamese script built on Chinese characters, 䀡 can write xem, “to see or watch”; other Nôm sources give the reading nhỏm. These are historical language uses, not interchangeable reactions.

What does 䀡 mean when someone sends it?

Treat it as a rare written form, not a self-explanatory reaction. If the surrounding text is classical Chinese, start with “peer, spy on, or inspect”; if the sender is discussing Vietnamese Nôm, it may be a spelling for xem.

With no context, ask which source, language, or reading they mean. The documented senses do not collapse into one safe chat interpretation.

Its register is classical and lexicographic; in casual chat it reads as an unexplained rare glyph.

Do not send it alone to mean ordinary “look”; the recipient may not know which reading you intend.

Why does 䀡 appear as a box?

It can be a font gap. A font without this rare Han glyph may show a missing-glyph box; choose a CJK font that covers the character.

How is 䀡 pronounced?

Chinese lexica record the Mandarin reading diān, in the first tone.
