What 䄀 means
It means “calamity” or “misfortune”: 䄀 is a variant of 禍.
The Han-era Shuowen tradition glosses the standard form 禍 as harm, framed as the spirits withholding blessing. Later explanations widen it to disaster, evil, and misfortune. That history belongs to 禍; it does not make 䄀 an older or separate word.
The Song–Yuan-era popular-character record treats 䄀 as a popular variant of 禍, with examples from 白袍記 and 目連記. So read 䄀 as huò, the same misfortune word, and use 禍 or 祸 when you want to be understood.
Someone sent me 䄀 — what am I supposed to read?
Read it as “misfortune”; the hard part is recognition, not tone.
In later dictionary traditions the same disaster and misfortune sense is recorded for the standard form across Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. 䄀 adds no new meaning. Keep it when quoting an old text exactly; otherwise replace it with 禍.
Reference-heavy and uncommon; it fits source-preserving or lexicographic text better than casual chat.
Sent alone, it may look unknown before it reads as “misfortune.”
