CJK Unified Ideograph-41E8

䇨 (read gòng) is a rare Chinese character for a bamboo basket that held cups and other table vessels — in one sense, chopsticks. It survives mostly in old dictionaries, so a lone 䇨 in a message is a lookup or a font test, not a reaction. Its second reading, xiáng in 䇨䉶, named a bamboo-mat sail or a wine strainer.

Text symbol

What 䇨 means

A bamboo basket for cups — or chopsticks.

Read gòng, 䇨 names a bamboo container made to hold cups and other table vessels — the same dictionary entry also gives a basket for chopsticks. A second reading, xiáng, appears in 䇨䉶: a bamboo-strip boat sail, or a bamboo basket for straining wine.

Where does 䇨 come from?

An entry in a Chinese dictionary compiled around 100–121 CE.

The Shuowen Jiezi lists 䇨 in its bamboo section: the top is the bamboo radical, and the lower part is a phonetic component that hinted at the sound. It is the earliest known record of the character.

Later dictionaries kept 䇨 but split its life in two — gòng stayed with the basket while xiáng lived on inside 䇨䉶. Related ware characters like 笿 and 䈰 covered similar containers.

Someone sent me 䇨 — what does it mean?

It is not a standard reaction — ask what they meant.

All of 䇨's dictionary meanings name bamboo objects, not feelings. Alone in a chat it is most likely a dictionary lookup, a font test, or a stray paste — ask which text it came from instead of guessing. Use it only when you mean the object itself, in transcription or historical-language talk.

Lexical and historical — it names bamboo objects and carries no built-in emotional tone.

A lone 䇨 is not a mood; ask what text it came from.

Questions people ask

3

Why does 䇨 show as a box?

A font gap, not a broken message. The character is still in the text; switch to a CJK font that covers Extension A or open it in a character map.

Is 䇨 an emoji?

No. It is a text ideograph from CJK Extension A; its look comes from your font, not from emoji artwork.

How is 䇨 pronounced?

Gòng for the basket sense; xiáng inside 䇨䉶, where it means a bamboo-mat sail or a wine strainer.
