Pronounced bān, it is the one-way fish trap: a basket whose inward funnel lets fish in, not out. Pronounced pán, it is thin bamboo strips for weaving. China's first dictionary, the Shuowen Jiezi, left it out; the record starts with the Yupian dictionary of 543, and the Guangyun rhyme dictionary of 1008 adds the trap sense. No documented modern or slang use exists as of 2026. A missing font may draw a box or a different glyph.
