Hanja 䢏

5264/6592

䢏 is a Korean-made hanja glossed as grain left short of one seok, a traditional grain measure. In the Jeju place name 䢏止岳 it may record the local sound rather than that gloss. The place-name reading is disputed; as of 2026, 䢏 has no established general chat meaning.

What 䢏 means

Its Korean gloss is grain short of one seok.

A 2013 analysis treats the character as 辶 plus 斗: 辶 supplies an “edge” or “surrounding area” sense, while 斗 supplies the grain-measuring idea. That connects the form to its Korean gloss.

The earliest documented appearance is 䢏止岳 in a 1702–03 record from Jeju. This establishes the spelling by then, not when the character was created. The record is called 탐라순력도.

What does 䢏 mean in the Jeju place name?

It may represent the local name’s sound, not its grain gloss.

One reading treats 䢏止岳 as a sound-based spelling of the local name 무찌오름. Another reads the old grain gloss as “incomplete”; a 2025 Jeju analysis rejects that shortcut and links the name to the mountain’s flat ridge. Later records use spellings such as 無止岳, 母旨岳, and 母地岳. The 䢏止岳 place-name reading remains disputed, so “incomplete mountain” overstates the evidence.

Which characters are related to 䢏?

Its documented links include three Korean forms and a Gu Zhuang entry.

A 2013 study links 䢏, 䢘, 逇, and 迲 as Korean-made hanja built using 辶 in a meaning-bearing role associated with an edge or boundary. Their companion components are 斗, 守, 地, and 去, respectively. This is a construction relationship, not resemblance alone.

Chinese dictionary records assign 䢏 other language-specific roles: a personal-name use, a Korean reading for the grain gloss, and a Gu Zhuang use also recorded for 𰂤. These entries do not establish one meaning shared across languages.

Use 䢏 in Korean hanja, historical, or Jeju place-name discussion; on its own it reads as specialist or deliberately obscure.

Do not translate 䢏止岳 as “incomplete mountain” without noting the dispute.
