What 䰯 means
It means “to fear” or “dread.”
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education says in its 2024 entry that 䰯 is absent from Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary; it also cites later dictionaries: Guangya, Yupian, Guangyun and Jiyun.
Mandarin yì sounds like “ee” with a falling tone. Japanese gi and ge sound roughly like “ghee” and “get” without its final t.

1Why does 䰯 show as a box?
The active font may lack its glyph. As of 2026, Unicode guidance calls a blank-square fallback “tofu.” A font that includes this Han character or an app’s fallback font can display it; the character’s meaning is unchanged.
