Chinese character 丑

18/20992

In Chinese, 丑 can mean “ugly,” name the Ox-linked branch in a traditional calendar, or label the comic role in traditional theatre. A bare remark about someone can sound like a blunt insult; a calendar or theatre term points elsewhere. Its early written form was read as a hand with a pointed nail or claw.

What 丑 means

It depends on the surrounding word. The earliest forms associated with 丑 appear on oracle bones—bones inscribed for divination—and on bronzes from the Late Shang period. Paleographers read the shape as a hand with a pointed nail or claw; its early sense was “claw” or “nail,” not the Ox.

Later, 丑 was borrowed as the second of the twelve Earthly Branches, a set of calendar labels. Paired with the ten Heavenly Stems, another set of labels, they form a traditional 60-step cycle used to mark years, months, days, hours, and directions. 丑 is linked with the Ox. It also names the comic role in traditional Chinese theatre. Japanese uses 丑 for the Ox in traditional zodiac, time, and direction labels.

What does 丑 mean when someone sends it?

A bare 丑 is too ambiguous to decode safely. In a comment about someone's appearance, 丑 can mean “ugly” or “bad-looking” and sound insulting. In a calendar or theatre term, it means something else. If you received only the single character, ask what it refers to before treating it as a judgment.

The neighboring text sorts the readings: 丑年 and 乙丑 point to the Ox branch, 丑时 names the old 1–3 a.m. time segment, and 丑角 is the comic stage role.

Why can 丑 mean “ugly”?

Simplified Chinese uses 丑 for the older form 醜. Historically, 丑 carried the branch and theatre senses, while 醜 meant “ugly” or “disgraceful.” Simplified Chinese merged the ugly sense into 丑; Traditional Chinese keeps 醜. The written form therefore depends on which Chinese script convention the text uses.

Neutral in calendar and theatre terms; blunt and insulting when aimed at someone's appearance.

A bare 丑 after someone's photo can read as “ugly.”
