Chinese character 丕

22/20992

In classical Chinese, 丕 (Mandarin pī, roughly “pee” with a high, level tone) means “great” or “grand.” 丕變 is “great change”; 丕業, “great enterprise.” Bronze inscriptions sometimes used 不 for this sense; later 丕 gained a bottom stroke.

Text symbol

What 丕 means

It means “great” or “large.” Classical Chinese is the formal written language of older texts. 丕 heightens a compound’s sense: 丕變, a major change; 丕業, a great undertaking. Older dictionaries also record “then” and “follow.”

Bronze inscriptions sometimes used 不 for “great,” even doubling it as 不不. Later forms added a lower horizontal stroke to distinguish 丕 from 不, which carries the negative sense “not.”

Literary and formal; 丕 gives compounds a grand tone.

Do not confuse it with 不; one low stroke distinguishes them.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 丕 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
