What 丘 means
A natural rise in the ground. Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses it as raised earth. Older forms appear in oracle-bone writing (on bone or shell), bronze inscriptions, manuscripts, and seal script (an old formal style).
Chinese uses 丘 in terrain, place-name, burial-mound, and land-measure terms, and in 孔丘, Confucius’s personal name. Japanese reads it おか (“oh-kah”) for hill and キュウ (“kyoo,” long “oo”) in compounds.
Neutral for terrain; also a Chinese name.
For a Chinese surname, use the person’s own spelling.
