What 丛 means
A cluster or thicket.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE, glosses 叢 as “gathered.” The form combines 丵, a component associated with plants growing in clusters, and 取, which contributes the sound. That image extends to groups of people or things, dense writing, and book series; compounds specify what is clustered, such as grass in 草丛, a forest in 丛林, or books in 丛书. The modern forms pair simplified 丛 with traditional 叢.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 丛 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
