What 丧 means
丧 names mourning or loss, and can label a bleak mood online.
An early form appears in oracle-bone writing—divination marks carved on animal bones and turtle shells—and is described as a mulberry tree with a harvesting tool. The graph was later borrowed for mourning. Bronze-inscription forms added 亡, a component used for “loss” or “death”; seal-script forms recast it as 哭 (“cry”) plus 亡.
In classical ritual, 丧 named formal mourning: rules for crying, clothing, and mourning periods marked kinship and ordered a return to daily life. In present-day compounds, 丧礼 points to mourning rites, 丧失 to loss, and 丧气 to dejection.
What does it mean when someone sends 丧
In online self-description, it usually signals a bleak mood.
A 2019 study of mainland Chinese online discourse, drawing on published writing and interviews, describes 丧 as ironic self-mockery rather than necessarily a literal report of the speaker’s condition. A study of Chinese catchwords from 2013–2022 connects 丧-related expressions with pushing back against mainstream success talk and finding recognition among people under similar pressure.
The online sense can share pressure or puncture motivational language. By itself, a bare 丧 does not tell you that someone has died; in a condolence exchange, it can sound dismissive.
How do I type 丧 and why does it appear as 喪
Enter sang and choose by the full word; 喪 is the traditional form.
In Mandarin, mourning words use a high, level tone, while words for loss or dejection use a falling tone. A tone-less Pinyin keyboard gives both as sang, so choose the character from the compound or candidate list.
喪 is the corresponding traditional Chinese written form. Fonts may draw its strokes differently, but 丧 remains the same text character; use 喪 when writing in a traditional Chinese standard.
Formal in mourning terms, slangy and self-mocking in online talk. The surrounding words and situation set the register.
Don’t send bare 丧 as a condolence; it can reduce another person’s grief to a gloomy label.

1Why does 丧 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
