What 个 means
It is a general classifier, not a standalone number. A classifier, or measure word, is a counting word Chinese places between a number and a noun: number classifier noun. 个 works with many people, objects and abstract things, but it cannot replace every noun’s more specific measure word.
Not every 个 counts something. A 2016 grammar analysis describes it introducing a state or outcome. In 吃它一个痛快, the point is eating to your heart’s content, not eating one countable “pleasure.”
Is 个 rude?
No; it is ordinary, neutral Chinese. For people, the classifier 位 explicitly adds respect. Choose 位 for a respectful introduction; someone using 个 is not insulting you by that choice alone.
Where did 个 come from?
Its counting use developed over centuries. A 2017 historical study traces written 个 to counting bamboo-related arrow shafts before China’s Wei–Jin period. It describes growing use of 箇 in Han-dynasty texts and broader counting of people, animals, plants and matters by the later Tang dynasty. The usage evolved; it was not invented at one moment.
The shape’s origin is disputed. An older explanation derives 个 from the character 介; a 2024 study instead proposes a path involving arrows and counting tokens. Resemblance to 介 does not prove ancestry.
Grammar also differs by region. A 2008 study records related ge forms meaning “this” or “that,” or working as grammatical linking words, in some southern Chinese varieties and nearby Mandarin areas. A 个 in dialect writing may not be doing Mandarin’s counting job.
