Chinese character 为

59/20992

为 is a Chinese character that can mean “for” or “because of” when pronounced wèi, and “do,” “become,” or “act as” when pronounced wéi in Mandarin. You’ll meet this wei character in everyday phrases about reasons, purposes, and roles. The surrounding word tells you which reading fits.

What 为 means

Both: choose the pronunciation from the word and its meaning. Read wèi in 为你 (“for you”) and 因为 (“because”); read wéi in 成为 (“become”), 认为 (“think”), and 以为 (“suppose”). Position alone is not a reliable rule.

Pinyin, the system for writing Mandarin pronunciation with Latin letters, marks these tones as wéi and wèi. Numbered spellings use wei2 and wei4 respectively.

Where did 为 come from?

Its ancestor appears in Shang oracle-bone inscriptions. These were inscriptions on bones and shells used for divination. Western Zhou bronze inscriptions preserve later forms. The character evolved through writing styles; these ancestors are not today's exact simplified shape.

Modern analyses commonly interpret early forms as a hand guiding an elephant, linked to handling or doing work. Shuowen, an ancient Chinese character dictionary, instead identified a macaque. The elephant interpretation draws on earlier inscriptions, but the precise original action remains uncertain.

Its grammar changed too. By the Late Tang–Five Dynasties period, 因为 served to connect a reason to a statement: “because.” 作为 developed from a verbal use into “as,” introducing a role.

Is 为 the same as 為 or 爲?

Yes: these are simplified and traditional counterparts. 为 is simplified; 為 and 爲 belong to traditional Chinese writing. Match the writing convention of your text, rather than choosing a form to sound warmer or more formal.

为 itself is neutral; the surrounding phrase carries the attitude.

Don't give a lone 为 a fixed translation or tone. Ask for the surrounding text.

Can someone send 为 alone?

Yes, but ask for the rest of the phrase. They might be discussing the character or have sent an incomplete message; 为 alone doesn't establish the intended pronunciation or translation.
