What 久 means
Its origin is unclear; its duration sense is ancient. One traditional account links its shape to moxibustion, a heat treatment. A late Warring States to Qin text uses 久 for duration, but does not prove its first appearance.
In Japanese, kana syllables く (hiragana) and ク (katakana) derive from 久; 乆 is a recorded variant.
Formal in 久仰.
久 alone does not mean “long time no see.”

1Questions people ask
1Why does 久 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
