What 乗 means
It can mean riding, carrying someone aboard, or multiplication. In 乗る (のる, noru), the subject rides; in 乗せる (のせる, noseru), the subject puts a person or thing aboard. 乗算 means multiplication.
Forms of 乘 appear in Shang oracle script around 1250–1000 BCE. One interpretation sees a person climbing onto a tree or support, linking the form to mounting. Over time, 乘 also developed uses for multiplying, counting vehicles, recording history, and Buddhist teachings. Japanese 乗 is the simplified Japanese form of 乘; Chinese uses 乘.
Ordinarily neutral; in 便乗, the riding idea can mean joining by taking advantage of an opening, which sounds opportunistic.
Do not infer “ride” or “multiply” from 乗 alone.

1Why does 乗 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
