What 乨 means
乨 is a historical form of 始, meaning “begin.” In ordinary modern Chinese, 始 is the form to use.
始 appears in bronze inscriptions—writing on bronze objects—from the late Shang or early Western Zhou. The exact 乨 appears in 古文孝經, an old-text version of the Classic of Filial Piety, a Chinese book about respect for parents; Japanese copies date to the late Tang. A Sui tomb inscription and a Tang bridge inscription also record 乨 for 亂 (“disorder”).
