Han character 予

137/20992

In Chinese, 予 means “give” or “grant,” as in 予以; Japanese compounds use it for “in advance.” Mandarin’s “give” reading yǔ is low then rising; classical “I,” yú, rises.

What 予 means

Separate histories brought the meanings together.

One account traces 予 to a branch of 呂, with examples in early bronze inscriptions. Chinese first-person use appears no earlier than the Spring and Autumn period; older texts used 余.

Another account sees a loom shuttle carrying thread across a loom and links this motion with “giving.” In Japan’s 1946 character reform, 予 replaced 豫 in “in advance” words such as 予告 and 予約.

Standalone Japanese 予 for “I” sounds literary and mainly masculine; in compounds it is ordinary.
