CJK Character 亞

159/20992

亞 usually means “second,” “next,” or “sub-”; in 亞細亞 and 亞洲 it is also part of the sound-based Chinese name for Asia. Use 亞 for Traditional Chinese, 亚 for Mainland simplified writing, and 亜 for standard Japanese. Its old graph’s origin is disputed rather than tied to a single inventor.

What 亞 means

It means “second,” “next,” or “sub-,” depending on the word.

In early Chinese, the graph had a disputed origin and the Han-era Shuowen tradition glossed its original sense as “ugly.” Classical use keeps the “what comes next or ranks below” idea: a second offering, a deputy rank, or the person just below a senior figure.

In Chinese, 亞細亞 and its shorter form 亞洲 use 亞 for sound to render Asia. That Asia use is a borrowed name, not a judgment that Asia is “inferior.”

Where did 亞 come from?

No inventor is recorded; it evolved through Shang and later scripts.

The earliest surviving forms cited here belong to Shang oracle-bone writing — inscriptions on bone and shell — and Western Zhou bronze traditions. Its picture is debated: the Han-era Shuowen explanation sees a person with a bent back, while another explanation reads it as an ancient dwelling foundation or tomb-like plan.

By the Ming period, Chinese texts contained 亞細亞洲; in 1602, Matteo Ricci’s world map presented 亞細亞 as the Chinese rendering of Asia. The shorter 亞洲 compresses that borrowed name.

Which form should I use?

Match the form to the writing standard.

Use 亞 in Traditional Chinese, 亚 in Mainland simplified writing, and 亜 in standard Japanese. Japanese dictionaries list 亞 as the older form; the shapes are related, but they are not interchangeable style choices when the surrounding text follows one standard.

If your sample looks different, check the font and the script before calling it wrong. A typeface can redraw the same text character; it does not turn 亞 into an emoji or give it a reaction meaning. Copy it from the palette above once you have the right standard.

Formal and lexical: it belongs inside a word, name, or title, not as a free-floating reaction.

Match the script standard; the wrong regional form can look like a typo.
