What 亢 means
亢 means “high,” with a shade of “too high” or “proud.” In a modern Chinese word, the partner characters decide whether it describes pitch, excitement, arrogance, excess, or resistance.
The graph's earliest evidence is in oracle-bone and bronze records, but its original sense is unsettled. The character evidence records an oracle-bone use as a personal name and bronze uses as clan or personal names; one bronze inscription uses it as a loan for 黃, a belt or sash term later usually written 衡. No single inventor or neat picture-story is defensible.
The Han-period Shuowen Jiezi defined it as the human neck; later dictionaries record related senses including “high,” “firm,” “proud,” “extreme,” and “resist.” Translating 亢 as only “arrogant” breaks compounds such as 高亢 and 亢奋.
What does 亢龍有悔 mean?
It warns that reaching the highest point can end in regret. In the I Ching, the phrase describes the dragon at the extreme upper position; its accompanying commentary says fullness cannot last. Read it as a caution about overreaching, not as praise for ambition.
亢 also has a separate traditional astronomical life as 亢宿, the second mansion in the Eastern Azure Dragon group. In the traditional 28-mansion system, such lodges marked positions in the sky and served calendar traditions. Here 亢 is a star-lodge label, not a personality judgment.
How should I read 亢 in a message?
Read the surrounding word or quotation before choosing an English gloss. A lone 亢 does not tell you whether the sender means “high,” a surname, 亢宿, or a classical allusion. Ask for the phrase if there is no surrounding text.
A modern Chinese reader may meet it inside a familiar compound such as 高亢 or 亢奋; a classical-text reader may recognize 亢龍有悔; an astronomy or calendrical context points to 亢宿. The register is literary, technical, or name-like rather than a ready-made chat reaction.
As a standalone character, 亢 feels literary, technical, or name-like; modern readers more often meet its sense inside a compound or fixed phrase.
Do not translate 亢 as simply “arrogant”; in 亢奋 and 亢宿, that reading is wrong.

Can 亢 be a surname?
Yes. 亢 is also used as a Chinese surname, so a standalone occurrence may be a name rather than an adjective or classical allusion.
