It depends: 亹 means untiring progress, or an archaic gorge.

The wei reading appears in 亹亹 and 亹亹不倦, describing continuous, tireless effort or forward movement. The men reading names a narrow gorge or pass, and survives in the historical place spelling 亹源.

The earliest textual trail is 亹亹文王 in the Classic of Poetry, praising King Wen's unceasing virtue. That proves the word's early literary life, not that today's graphic was already fixed. As of 2026-09-14, no single inventor or original design purpose is established.

Why does 亹 have two readings?

The surrounding word decides the reading.

Read it wěi in 亹亹, the repeated form tied to diligence and continuity. Read it mén in the old gorge sense and in 亹源. The county name 亹源县 was changed to 门源县 in 1959 because rare place-name characters were hard to read.

斖 is a recorded variant spelling, and 亹亹 also appears as 斖斖. Treat them as historical relatives, and do not silently normalize an old quotation without checking its context.
