Han character 伨

297/20992

伨 has two distinct uses: Mandarin dictionaries record it as a variant of 徇/侚, while in Taiwanese Hokkien (Taigi) it is a word for supporting someone, balancing a load, pairing in marriage, or arguing. If it arrives alone, the language and surrounding words matter.

What 伨 means

A Mandarin variant, and a living Taigi word.

Mandarin dictionaries record 伨 as a variant of 徇 and link it to 侚. 《四聲篇海》, a dictionary compiled in the Jin dynasty, records 伨 as a form of 徇, whose older glosses include “to use” and “to show widely.”

In Taiwanese Hokkien (Taigi), 伨 is pronounced thīn. That is Taiwanese Romanization: th marks a t spoken with a puff of air. It can mean support someone, even out a load, arrange a marriage, or argue with someone.

What does 伨 mean when someone sends it?

Language and surrounding words decide how to read it.

A standalone 伨 does not tell you whether the sender means the Mandarin dictionary variant or the Taigi word. In a Taigi sentence, 伨 can work as a verb; 相伨 specifically means mutual support, participation, or coordination. Ask what language or phrase the sender has in mind if you receive only 伨.

A bare 伨 may be a Mandarin dictionary variant or a written Taigi verb; context sets the reading.

Do not assume a standalone 伨 means “I support you”; that sense belongs to a Taigi phrase.

Why does 伨 look different in another font?

CJK fonts can draw the same character with different proportions or stroke shapes. The encoded character remains 伨; a font change alone does not turn it into another character.
