What 伫 means
It means standing still for a long time.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, defines 佇 as standing a long time and analyzes its form as 人 (“person”) plus 宁. The compounds 伫立 and 伫候 carry this idea into standing and waiting. In the classical line 延佇乎吾將反, the speaker lingers before returning; 延佇 can also express expectation.
Why do I see 佇 instead of 伫?
They are simplified and traditional forms of the same character.
Simplified Chinese uses 伫; traditional Chinese uses 佇. The writing follows the script convention, while the word stays the same.
伫 has a literary tone; it makes waiting sound deliberately written.
In casual chat, it can feel stilted rather than neutral.

Questions people ask
1Why does 伫 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
