What 佭 means
It means “not submitting”—refusing to obey or yield.
If someone sends 佭 alone, the character supplies its older sense; the surrounding conversation has to explain why it was chosen.
An early Chinese dictionary, 玉篇, glosses the paired form 㒕降 as “not submitting” in its 543 tradition; that is not a direct record of 佭. Later lexicography also records 㒕佭, while questioning how that form was passed down.
Rare historical Han character; if a font lacks its glyph, 佭 may fail to render.
A standalone 佭 is best read literally as “not submitting,” not as a reaction.

1Why does 佭 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
