What 侯 means
侯 began as an archery target and became a noble title. Early forms appear in late Shang oracle-bone and bronze writing. Older form 𥎦 depicts a target and arrow used in ritual archery. By the Zhou period, 侯 meant “lord” or “marquis”; a later five-rank hierarchy placed it second.
In Mandarin, the surname 侯 is pronounced Hóu, roughly like “hoe” with a rising tone; pinyin writes this pronunciation. Japanese reads the kanji kō, a long “o,” and retains the senses “lord” and “target.”
Formal in historical compounds; also used as a family name.
A 2012 Taiwan household-registration case corrected 候 to 侯 in a family name.

1Why does 侯 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
