Character 俄

The word around 俄 decides: Russia, Russian, or a brief interval. In modern Chinese, 俄 is compact written shorthand: 俄国 names Russia, 俄语 the Russian language, and 中俄 China–Russia relations. Classical Chinese uses it in time expressions such as 俄而, meaning a moment later. Japanese uses the same character in 俄か and 俄然 for sudden or improvised things.

Was 俄 invented to mean Russia?

No. Its written and literary history predates that country-name use. In an early classical text, the Shijing, a collection of Chinese poems, 侧弁之俄 describes a cap tilted to one side. Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, records a sense of leaning. Traditional analysis treats 俄 as a sound-and-meaning character: 亻 points to the human category, while 我 supplies the sound.

Qing-era records include several Chinese names for Russia before 俄罗斯 became standard; modern Chinese uses 俄 as a compact form of that name. Japanese vocabulary preserves a different branch of the character's meanings.
