What 俲 means
It means “imitate”; it is a variant, not a separate word.
Modern Chinese uses 效. Taiwan’s variant dictionary lists 俲 under 傚 and marks 俲 nonstandard. Early glosses link the family with teaching and imitation; later entries give 效 senses such as service, effect, and proof.
A related form is linked to the Jing Beihai stele, an Eastern Han stone inscription. Longkan Shoujian, a Buddhist character dictionary, catalogued nonstandard forms for Buddhist readers in 997.
