What 俿 means
It has a tiger variant and a classical wheel sense. Chinese character dictionaries record 俿 as an alternate written form of 虎, meaning “tiger,” and as a variant of 傂 with a separate sense meaning “wheel.” The latter appears in a quotation from Taixuan Jing, an ancient Chinese text attributed to Yang Xiong: a damaged wheel and a stumbling horse signal that the cart should stop.
俿’s earliest dated dictionary attestation is in 玉篇 (c. 543), a Chinese dictionary from the Liang dynasty. Its variant status connects it to the practice of writing characters in alternate forms; that surviving entry does not date this particular graph’s origin.
How do I type 俿?
Use a Han-character input method with a listed code or reading. 俿 Cangjie input: references list OYPU, and some also list OYPN; the code accepted depends on the input method. A Japanese input method may offer it under the kana readings ち, じ, or かたたがい if it includes this uncommon kanji.
As of 2026, the active font determines whether 俿 appears and how its strokes are drawn; a font without coverage may show a blank box.
A dictionary and classical-literary form; 虎 is the ordinary Chinese character for “tiger.”
Do not swap it into ordinary Chinese for 虎; its documented variant status does not make it a general-purpose spelling.

Questions people ask
1Why does 俿 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
