What 僤 means
The passage decides: 僤 can mean “swift” or “thick.”
The earliest known written explanation, as of 2026, is in the Han-era Chinese dictionary 說文解字. It glosses 僤 as 疾也 (“swift”) and quotes 句兵欲無僤 from the classical text 周禮; in that line, 僤 describes speed.
In the poetry collection 詩經, 我生不辰,逢天僤怒 is glossed as 厚也 (“thick” or “heavy”) in the traditional commentary 毛傳. The passage, not one fixed modern conversational sense, determines the meaning.
Are 𨼒, 殫, and 儃 variants of 僤?
Some dictionaries record relationships; none is a universal substitute.
僤 combines 亻, the person-related component, with 單, which supplies its sound. Historical Chinese dictionaries link it to 𨼒, a form used in a place name in the ancient state of Lu; some record 僤 as an obsolete form of 殫 and list 儃 as a variant.
Why does 僤 appear as a blank box?
Your active font may not contain a glyph for it. 僤 is text drawn by the active font; a font with broad CJK coverage can display it without changing the character's identity.
Literary and archaic; it points to a classical text or character study, not everyday conversation.
Without a quotation or explanation, 僤 leaves the intended meaning unclear.
