What 刓 means
It means to pare, carve, or wear away.
The ancient Chinese poetry collection Songs of Chu uses 刓方以為圜 (“pare a square round”). The image criticizes trading principle for worldly tact; 刓 also describes worn edges or damaged writing.
Its earliest form is disputed: records point to animal-bone inscriptions or Small Seal, an early standardized script. Shuowen Jiezi, an old Chinese character dictionary, analyzes 刓 as 刀 (“knife”) plus 元 for sound.

1Why does 刓 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
