What 协 means
协 means working together. In Mandarin, 协助 means “assist,” 协调 “coordinate,” and 协议 “agreement”; translate the whole compound.
A Han-era Chinese dictionary, Shuowen Jiezi, explains traditional 協 through people acting in harmony: it reads 十 as “many” and 劦 as gathered strength. Classical Chinese uses extended the idea to harmony, compliance, and help. Japanese 協 also means fitting together or settling matters.
协 usually forms part of a Chinese compound; the full word determines its meaning.
A lone 协 is not a complete reaction; read the whole word before guessing intent.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
