Japanese kanji 収

Text symbol

What 収 means

It marks taking something in, collecting it, or bringing it under control.

The Japanese compounds 収入 (income), 収穫 (harvest), and 収録 (recording) use the reading しゅう (shū). In verbs, 収める means put away or obtain; 収まる means settle or fit.

The early Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi glosses 收 as “capture.” Traditional analysis treats 攴 as an action component and 丩 as its sound component; that explains the structure of 收, not when Japanese 収 was invented.

Why does 収 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
