Character 召

1517/20992

召 means “summon” or “call in” in Chinese, often as a formal call from someone with authority. It appears in words for convening a group, summoning, and recalling. In Japanese, 召す is an honorific verb for calling someone and, depending on the object, eating, wearing, or riding.

What 召 means

It means to summon or call someone in.

In Mandarin Chinese, 召 is zhào (Pinyin, fourth tone) and can describe a call from someone above to someone below. In 召集 it means to convene people; in 召禍 it means to bring about disaster. For a friendly invitation, 召 can sound like an order to appear.

Japanese reads the character しょう in compounds and めす in the honorific verb 召す. That verb can mean calling for someone, eating, wearing, or riding; the object tells you which action is meant. The honorific force belongs to 召す and related forms, not every word containing 召.

Where did 召 come from?

Its early forms are interpreted as a call to guests.

In oracle-bone inscriptions—ancient writing carved on animal bones and turtle shells—early forms of 召 are read as two hands lifting wine with a spoon, as if calling guests. Later writing on bronze vessels keeps that arrangement, sometimes adding a vessel or 口 (“mouth”) to suggest a spoken call.

In seal script, the spoon-like 匕 was simplified into the shape that now resembles 刀. The record traces a character that changed across writing styles, not a sign invented in modern times.

What if someone sends only 召?

Use the language and complete word to interpret it.

Mandarin also uses 召 as shào (Pinyin, fourth tone) in Chinese surnames and the name of the ancient Shao state; that reading differs from zhào. Japanese uses しょう in compounds and めす in 召す, with different grammatical roles. The character alone does not settle which reading or meaning is intended.

In Chinese, 召 can sound official and top-down; Japanese 召す is honorific.

A bare 召 does not tell you whether it is a summons, a name, or part of Japanese wording.
