What 叺 means
It stored or carried goods.
A woven mat was folded and sewn to make it. 日本書紀, a Japanese chronicle, records the word in 720; this dates the word, not necessarily this spelling. By mid-Edo (Japan’s Edo period), it also named a sealed, decorative たばこ入れ for cut tobacco. Tenpō–Ansei local histories describe soil-filled 叺 as flood barriers. Around 1955, regional rice records place it between straw bales and later hemp and paper bags.
Historical Japanese sack term; add かます or a gloss for clarity.
In Japanese, 叺 is the sack; かます can also name a fish.

Questions people ask
1Why does 叺 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
