What 叽 means
It means a small sound, quiet talk, or a chirp.
In current Mandarin, 叽 imitates a bird or insect call, or describes speech that is quiet, unclear, or noisy. Read the neighbors — 叽咕, 叽里咕噜, 叽叽歪歪 — before choosing chirp, whisper, or chatter.
The older trail is different. Traditional 嘰 is recorded in Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, as “to eat a little,” with 口, mouth, for meaning and 幾 for sound. Classical sources also record a sigh sense. Modern use foregrounds sound and speech.
Read the compound, not the glyph alone.
A bare 叽 is not a fixed chat reaction. If someone sends it alone, treat it as incomplete and read the surrounding sentence before assigning friendliness, annoyance, or mockery.
The compound supplies the verdict: doubled 叽 suggests chirping or chattering, while longer forms mark whispering, muddled speech, or complaint. That shift is lexical, not a secret emoji code.
Use 叽叽歪歪 carefully.
In modern Chinese, 叽叽歪歪 calls speech or behavior nagging, fussy, or evasive. Use it as criticism unless the relationship clearly makes it teasing.
If the same word appears as 嘰, it is the traditional counterpart of 叽, not a different word. Match the form to the script around it.
In compounds 叽 can be playful, descriptive, or critical; 叽叽歪歪 is the risky one.
叽叽歪歪 is a complaint, not a neutral way to say someone is talking.

1Why does 叽 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
