Character Wu 呜

1629/20992

呜 is a written wū, the Mandarin pinyin pronunciation for this character: a cry, whimper, or plaintive sound; doubled, it usually performs crying or a mock complaint. In Chinese chat, 呜呜 softens or dramatizes emotion rather than naming one event. Its older companions are 呜呼 and 一命呜呼, whose tones are literary and sometimes fatal.

What 呜 means

Usually, it marks a sob, whine, or lament. In Chinese chat, a bare 呜 is a compact cry; doubled as 呜呜, it sounds like written sobbing, whining, or a low drawn-out noise. Read the surrounding words before deciding whether the sender is genuinely upset or play-acting a complaint.

In ACG communities, 呜呜 also works as a cute written crying tic, including exaggerated complaints. Its older family is broader: 呜呼 is a lamenting exclamation, while 一命呜呼 is a death euphemism. That older funeral sense belongs to those fixed phrases, not to every casual 呜呜.

Where did 呜 come from?

It evolved around a vocal exclamation, not a single invention. The earliest defensible evidence is the exclamation 呜呼 in transmitted texts from the Spring and Autumn period; the Taiwan Ministry of Education entry says 嗚 is not listed in the early character dictionary Shuowen. The word's history is therefore older than the modern simplified glyph.

The traditional form's structure explains the route: 口, the mouth radical, marks a mouth sound and 烏 supplies the sound. Dictionary records then extend that sound family from lament to 呜咽's sobbing, 呜呜's singing or low noise, and a horn or steamship's toot.

A 2021 Hong Kong language column documents a separate trap: writers used 呜谢 where the established phrase is 鸣谢. It also traces 呜呼 from the classical exclamation to the later death euphemism 一命呜呼. Use that history as a boundary: 呜 can carry lament, but it is not a general substitute for 鸣.

呜 vs 鸣: which one is right?

Use 呜 for crying or lament; use 鸣 in 鸣谢. In “呜呜,我好难过”, the doubled form performs a whimper. In “鸣谢”, 鸣 means to express thanks; “呜谢” is a wrong substitution, not a creative spelling.

Pick 呜 for sound and sorrow, 鸣 for thanks. Copy it from the palette above when the two look alike in small text.

Informal, emotive, and slightly performative in chat; literary in 呜呼 and idiomatic in 一命呜呼.

Do not write 呜谢 for thanks; the established word is 鸣谢.

Questions people ask

3

Someone sent me 呜呜 — are they crying or joking?

Either. It marks performed crying, and repetition can make the complaint playful; the surrounding words and relationship decide whether comfort or a laugh fits.

Is 呜谢 correct?

No. Use 鸣谢 for “thanks”; 呜 belongs to the lament and sound family, so 呜谢 reads as a character mix-up.

How do I pronounce 呜?

As wū in Mandarin pinyin: a high, flat “woo” sound. Doubled 呜呜 stretches that same crying or humming sound.
