What 啌 means
It appears in words for coughing and angry speech.
The earliest known written record of 啌 is in the Longkan Shoujian, a Chinese dictionary compiled in 997. The Taiwan Ministry of Education Variant Character Dictionary (2024) notes that the earlier Shuowen Jiezi does not include it. That dictionary gives angry speech and coughing as its glosses.
In veterinary writing, 啌嗽 and 肺啌 refer to animal coughing or respiratory illness. 啌咙 and 啌咚 are written sound effects for impacts. These sound meanings belong to compounds; a bare 啌 is not a general-purpose bang.
What does 啌 mean in a message?
A lone 啌 has no single reading without context.
A 2017 dialect inventory records a Wuxi use as a verb: deliberately praising or elevating someone so extravagantly that it embarrasses them or invites laughter. This is a regional use, not a safe assumption for every Chinese reader.
If someone sends only 啌, the character alone cannot tell you whether they mean a cough, angry speech, a compound's sound, or this Wuxi verb. Ask what word or dialect they have in mind.
