What 嘇 means
Its meaning depends on the phrase and language around it.
The Yupian is a Chinese dictionary whose tradition is dated to 543; its mouth-section entry glosses 嘇 as holding something in the mouth. The surviving text was expanded and revised, so 543 dates the dictionary tradition, not the invention of the character. A 2024 Taiwan Ministry of Education entry says 嘇 does not appear in Shuowen, another Chinese dictionary, and records a pronunciation without a definition.
A lyric from the Song dynasty uses the cold-shivering sense; a play from the Yuan dynasty uses the grim one. A 2017 national dialect list records 嘇 for “eat” in Xiamen Minnan, the local Southern Min Chinese variety; this is regional, not a general Mandarin meaning. The mouth-related sense also appears in 唅嘇 and 啗嘇.
What does 嘇 mean when someone sends it?
A lone 嘇 does not reveal which reading the writer intends.
Ask what phrase or language it belongs to. If you use the character, include enough surrounding wording to make your intended sense clear.
Literary, historical, or dialectal; a lone 嘇 in casual chat needs context before you infer its meaning.
For “eat,” identify Xiamen Minnan; 嘇 alone does not signal that local reading.
