What 坻 means
It means a small islet or raised patch of land in water.
The pre-Qin (before the Qin dynasty) poem 《诗经·秦风·蒹葭》 imagines someone on a water islet; 《诗经》 is an early Chinese poetry collection. 《说文解字》, an early character dictionary, defines 坻 as a small 渚 (island) and records variants written with the water radical. 《尔雅》, an early reference work, ranks 洲 (habitable land in water), 渚, 沚, and 坻 from larger to smaller.
In 1172, 宝坻 became the name of a salt-producing county surrounded by water, drawing on the poem’s phrase 如坻如京.
The landform sense is literary; 宝坻 is the practical place-name use.
For 宝坻, say dǐ, not chí.

Questions people ask
1Why does 坻 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
