Character 埢

2531/20992

埢 has dictionary senses including earth piled over a tomb and a curved boundary or wall. In the old phrase 埢垣, it describes a curved wall; a dictionary also records a separate older Zhuang use meaning “market.” Sent alone, it leaves the intended sense open, so read it with its source or a gloss.

What 埢 means

Its senses include tomb earth and curved structures.

Chinese dictionaries associate 埢 with earth piled over a tomb, a curving boundary, and a rounded or curved wall. In 埢垣, an old written compound, it supplies the curved-wall sense.

What does the written record show?

Its trail runs through dictionaries, literature, and names. A 2024 entry by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education says 埢 is absent from 說文解字, an early Chinese character dictionary. It cites the transmitted 玉篇 (“Jade Chapters,” a character dictionary associated with a work completed in 543) and 龍龕手鏡 (“Mirror for the Dragon Niche,” completed in 997). The surviving 玉篇 text was revised, so 543 dates the work, not a proven first appearance of this exact form.

The Han-period work 甘泉賦 (“Rhapsody on Sweet Springs”) uses 埢垣 for a curved wall in a scene about a palace and sacrifices. A Ming-dynasty court chronicle also preserves 埢 in the personal name 懷埢.

A dictionary listing checked in 2026 also records 埢 as an older Zhuang written character meaning “market,” a separate use from the classical Chinese senses.

Someone sent 埢—what should I read?

Use its phrase or a gloss to identify the intended sense.

If it appears in classical Chinese, read the surrounding phrase; if it is part of a personal name, keep the name intact. A dictionary gloss distinguishes the tomb-earth and curved-wall senses, while an older Zhuang entry records “market.”

The documented examples are literary, dictionary, and personal-name uses; an unexplained one-character message leaves the sense open.

Alone, 埢 leaves the intended sense unclear.

No. Chinese dictionaries list three readings, tied to different words or senses; use the reading given for the specific phrase.

Why does 埢 look different in another font?

It can. CJK fonts may draw the same character differently under regional design conventions; a changed outline does not make it a different character.
