What 埲 means
It names rising dust, and Cantonese uses it to count walls.
An early Chinese character dictionary, 說文, does not include 埲; later works such as 龍龕手鏡 and 廣韻 record it. A Song-era poem by Wang Yucheng uses 塕埲 for dust rising.
In present-day Sichuan dialect writing, 埄/埲 can describe flying dust, rising smoke, or collected ash; Cantonese uses 埲 as a classifier for walls. The phrase and language determine the reading.
Why did someone send me 埲?
A bare 埲 leaves the intended sense open.
A Cantonese message may use it in a wall phrase: 一埲牆 means “one wall,” and 起咗埲圍牆 means “built a wall.” In a historical quotation or Sichuan dialect note, it may instead point to dust. Ask for the surrounding phrase or language if it arrived alone.
Is 埲 about dust or a wall?
Both readings are documented, but they belong to different contexts.
塕埲 is the historical dust compound. 埄 is listed as a variant of 埲, while Sichuan writing also has 塳 for flying dust. The wall-classifier use belongs to Cantonese phrases such as 一埲牆.
Regional and language-specific: dust in historical and Sichuan writing, a wall classifier in Cantonese.
A bare 埲 does not settle dust versus walls.
