What 堞 means
It means a battlement on a fortified wall. The Zuo zhuan entry for Xiang 6, traditionally dated to 567 BCE, already uses it for wall-top fighting positions. Shuowen Jiezi defines it as wall-top 女垣, the low screen giving cover between gaps.
Later use stretches the word. 城堞 can mean the city wall itself; 雉堞 names the crenellated parapet. A 2022 architectural account reserves 女儿墙 for roof or balcony parapets, while 堞 stays with old city walls.
Literary architecture; use 城墙 or 城垛 for an ordinary wall.
Sent alone, it can look like a typo or an unexplained classical reference.

1Why does 堞 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
