What 堾 means

A raised wall marks the edge of farmland.

Reports from 1963 and 1964 use 石堾 (“stone wall”) and 土堾 (“earth wall”) for terrace walls that retain water, soil, and fertilizer on slopes.

An Eastern Han-era Chinese character dictionary, 说文解字, records an older line beginning with 舛. A Jin-era dictionary links 堾 with 踳, whose older branch means “contrary” or “mixed”—a separate dictionary sense, not the farming noun.

A rural-dialect word; gloss it outside local or historical writing.

The 踳 link does not make “contrary” the field-wall meaning.

1

Why does 堾 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
