What 売 means
**売 means “sell,” not “buy.”
売る means “sell.” 名を売る means “make a name”; 喧嘩を売る means “pick a fight.” Both are figurative.
Why does 売 look different from 賣?
売 is Japan’s modern form of 賣.
賣 combines 出 (“put out”) and 買 (“buy”): goods go out for payment. Older forms appear in seal script (an early writing style), on bronze, and in manuscripts. The Chinese character dictionary 說文解字 (Shuowen Jiezi), compiled around 100–121 CE, defines 賣 as putting goods out; this records the selling sense, not 売’s origin. Some historical explanations link an earlier sense with reclaiming goods or compensating someone. Japanese uses 売; traditional Chinese, 賣; simplified Chinese, 卖.

1Why does 売 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
