What 壼 means
A palace corridor or inner palace (kǔn, kon). It can also name women's quarters or women's conduct.
A Han era Shuowen Jiezi entry records the older form 𡈋 as a palace passage and quotes the older Classic of Poetry phrase 室家之壼. Its form was read as palace walls enclosing a path, so its original job was to name that route. Later texts extended it to the palace interior and women's rooms; commentators glossed the poem's use as “broad.”
Japanese references keep the palace and inner-room senses and add shikimi, “threshold.” The older form 𡈋 and variant 壸 are connected; 壺 is separate.
Historical and literary; unexplained in ordinary chat, it looks obscure.
For a pot or bottle, use 壺.

1Why does 壼 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
