Han character 媫

3244/20992

媫 is a variant of 婕 and appears in 媫妤, another spelling of the historical title 婕妤. The title began as a women's court rank and later became a literary allusion to Ban Jieyu and lost favor. Sent alone, 媫 gives too little context for an emotional reading; ask what word or source it came from.

What 媫 means

It is a variant written form of 婕.

In Mandarin, it is read jié, with a rising tone; Pinyin writes Mandarin sounds with Latin letters. The title 媫妤 is another spelling of 婕妤, so the full word is the clue. Alone, 媫 says little about the sender's mood.

Why is 媫妤 a historical spelling?

The spellings trace a court title through different periods.

A Han dynasty history records the earlier form 倢伃. Under Emperor Wu, 婕妤 became a rank for women at court, placed alongside senior officials and marquises; later character references connect the rank to the variant 媫妤. Tang dynasty imperial edicts still use 媫妤 for appointments and promotions.

Later literature made 婕妤 an allusion to Ban Jieyu and lost favor at court. In the Nguyễn dynasty, Vietnamese court vocabulary used Tiệp dư for the same rank.

In historical writing, 媫 points to a spelling tradition; in an ordinary message, it may look like a typo.

Used alone, it can look like a typo; ask what word or source it came from.
