Han character 孎

3407/20992

孎 is a rare classical Han character for cautious or deferential behavior. The Eastern Han dictionary 《说文解字》 records that gloss; later lexicons add a woman's name reading and a description of a woman's careful, compliant manner. A Chinese pinyin input method may require selecting it from candidates.

What 孎 means

Its classical gloss describes careful, respectful conduct. 《说文解字》 glosses 孎 as 謹也, an old expression for behaving with care and deference.

By itself, 孎 does not tell you which recorded reading or sense is intended; the surrounding sentence has to settle that.

Where does 孎 come from?

Its earliest documented dictionary record is in an Eastern Han work. Xu Shen completed 《说文解字》 before 100 CE; his son presented it to Emperor An in 121 CE. The entry glosses 孎 as 謹也 and analyzes it as 女 plus 屬, with 屬 serving as the sound component.

Later lexicons record another reading used as a woman's name, describe a woman's careful and compliant manner, and connect one reading with 娕. These are separate dictionary senses, not one broad everyday meaning.

How do I type 孎?

Use a Mandarin pinyin input method and select the candidate. Try the untoned inputs zhu and chuo; if neither appears, use a component- or stroke-based IME. Unicode hexadecimal entry or a character viewer can also work.

A font can draw the same encoded Han character according to regional conventions. A change in stroke shape alone does not prove the text contains a different character.

Classical and lexicographic.

1

Why does 孎 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
