Chinese character 宰

3505/20992

宰 can mean slaughtering, governing, or a person in charge; the word around it settles which sense. In Chinese, 宰客 is a sharp accusation that a seller is exploiting customers. Japanese compounds use the same character for managing or an official, not this Chinese accusation.

What 宰 means

The word around 宰 tells you which sense is active. In Chinese, 宰 can mean slaughtering or cutting meat, governing, or a person in charge. The compound resolves it: 主宰 means control, 宰相 is a high minister, and 宰客 accuses a seller of ripping off customers.

The earliest dated evidence for 宰 is in bronze inscriptions from China's late-Shang dynasty; later forms appear on Western Zhou bronzes, bamboo slips from the Warring States period, and Han-dynasty manuscripts. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, interprets 宀 辛 as a person convicted of a crime doing service beneath a roof. Another old dictionary explanation treats 辛 as a knife for cutting sacrificial meat. These competing accounts connect 宰 with household or ritual service but leave its original meaning disputed.

What does 宰 mean when someone sends it?

Read 宰客 as an accusation, not a price description. In Chinese, 宰客 says a seller is exploiting customers; it is harsher than saying something costs a lot. In a 2018 notice, China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism grouped 欺客宰客 with forced consumption and illegal tourism practices.

Japanese reference dictionaries list 宰 in compounds for managing or an official, including 宰相, 家宰, and 主宰. Those Japanese uses do not carry the Mandarin accusation found in 宰客.

Why does 宰 look different in Chinese and Japanese text?

The same encoded character can have different regional drawings. Unicode identifies the text character, not one mandatory glyph. Fonts used for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean may follow different regional conventions, changing the visible shape without changing the character.

Formal in 主宰 and 宰相; accusatory in 宰客.

Do not use 宰客 to mean only “expensive”; it accuses the seller of exploitation.

Questions people ask

2

Is 宰客 safe to send to a boss?

Usually not. It directly accuses a seller or business of exploiting customers; use a neutral price complaint if that is what you mean.

Are the Chinese and Japanese shapes of 宰 supposed to match?

No. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fonts can follow different regional glyph conventions. The encoded character can stay the same while its visible design changes.
