寃 is a historical variant of 冤: it means being wronged, falsely accused, or denied justice. If someone sends it, read it as “that was unjust,” usually in a literary or source-preserving context. The older graph was explained as a rabbit trapped under a cover, while 寃 is the 宀-shaped variant.

Text symbol

What 寃 means

It names a wrong done to someone, especially a false charge.

Because 寃 is a variant of 冤, read it as injustice, a grievance, or being wronged and unable to clear the name. The same family reaches from a false accusation to a lingering grievance, a wronged spirit, or a wrongful loss. In a message it complains of unfair treatment; it is not a separate emoji reaction.

Where did 寃 come from?

寃 is the 宀-written variant of the older 冤 form.

The traditional explanation for 冤 reads the graph as a rabbit under a cover, unable to run and therefore bent or constrained. That is a lexicographic story linking confinement to being wronged, not proof that one inventor drew a literal rabbit scene.

The earliest dated evidence found for this exact 宀-form is the Eastern Han Pan Qian stele, dated 181 CE. Taiwan's variant dictionary cites that inscription for the form's early history. That is writing history; computer encoding came much later.

寃 is not the same as 怨

寃 points to the wrong; 怨 points to the resentment.

That distinction explains the drift. In literary and religious writing, a wrong can become a lasting grudge, a wronged dead person, or a plea to clear the name. Buddhist and Daoist popular writing developed phrases around 冤家債主 and 解冤 from the Song period onward.

Local reading traditions filter the same character: Japanese references give en and stress false accusation, while Korean Hanja references give won and keep grievance or injustice. For neutral modern Chinese write 冤; keep 寃 when a source, inscription, or house style calls for the variant.

Variant and historical register; for neutral modern Chinese, 冤 is safer, while 寃 suits quotations and preserved spellings.

Do not treat it as a new emoji meaning: 寃 is the variant form of 冤.

Why does 寃 show as a box or a different glyph?

It is a font-coverage issue, not a second meaning. 寃 is drawn by the selected CJK font; choose one with the glyph and compare its 宀 top with 冤's 冖.
