Where did 寶 come from?

It grew from a picture of valuables kept under a roof. The earliest stage shown is oracle-bone script: 宀, a roof, over 玉, jade, and 貝, cowrie shells once used as valuables. It evolved inside the writing tradition, with no single inventor.

Bronze, Chu-manuscript and small-seal forms add 缶, a vessel. The job stayed the same: name treasure kept safe. Later use widened it to precious people, revered objects, seals, and money.

Why does 寶 look different from 宝?

寶 and 宝 are script variants of one word. Traditional Chinese keeps full-form 寶; simplified Chinese uses 宝. Standard Japanese also uses 宝 and lists 寶 as its old form, while 寳 is a historical spelling in the same family.
